I’m making a list of goals for all aspects of my life, including fashion so here are my top 5 style resolutions for 2016. Hopefully my style goals will help you to come up with some or give you an idea of things you want to try out. I’m not normally one to take my goals and write them out, but this year I decided to try it. I made these goals with the intention and hopes of keeping them longer than the first 21 days in January.
1. Stop Wearing All Black & White & Add More Color
As a New Yorker, I love wearing all black. It’s so easy to put on black leggings, black boots and a black top. I never usually feel my best in this kind of a look though. That’s why my blog posts are me in my colorful outfits because that is what I feel best in. This year, I will still continue to wear black in a chic way, but I will wear more of the colored pieces I already have in my wardrobe. I also need to keep this in mind when shopping and go for the colored piece instead of the usual black.
2. Dress Up More
This means wearing an outfit that I put together the night before that I know will look good and make me feel good. Often times I wake up in the morning and I’m tired or its cold and I lack any motivation to dress up. I then return to my usual “uniform” of black leggings, a skirt and a long sweater. However, once I have picked out my outfit the night before, it makes it easier to get dressed up in the morning since it requires no more thought on my part. Getting dressed up means wearing my heels more and taking advantage of the pretty and nice pieces I already have in my wardrobe that I don’t wear enough. I need to remember it’s more than just comfort that matters and putting in a little more effort, even just 2o minutes, goes a long way.
3. Do My Hair & Makeup
This coming year, I am going to try to look more polished all together and that includes the hair and makeup. I generally let my hair air dry after my nighttime shower and then go a few days just using dry shampoo. So you could say my hair effort is minimal at best. This year, I want to curl it more and style it more often. I always feel better with my hair done nicely. This also goes for makeup. Often times I get really lazy and just put on BB Cream, concealer and blush in the morning. Since I work full time at a cosmetics company doing marketing, I should really put in a little more effort to my makeup look. This means doing my eye makeup or putting on a bright lip to pull the look together.
4. Take More Fashion Risks
Instead of sticking with my usual clothing combos, I am going to try out different looks with my existing pieces. So maybe I will finally try that t-shirt under a strapless dress look or pants with a skirt. Not sure what the looks will be yet, but if I am afraid to try something, I am going to do it. Or maybe I will dye my hair a crazy color. After all, fashion to me about having fun with it. If you can’t take a risk in what you wear, can you take a risk in any other aspects of your life? This sounds like a great place to start.
5. Get Rid Of Outdated Pieces
This will definitely be the hardest one for me. I have a closet stuffed full of things. Whether I wear them or not, I always feel guilty getting rid of my clothes that I’ve purchased or have received as presents. “Some day I will wear it,” I always think. I’m disillusioned and somewhat of a hoarder I think. This year is the year for me to finally downsize my wardrobe. Who needs that J.Crew pencil skirt that I bought when I thought my office wear would be all Olivia Pope like? I just don’t dress that traditionally and I find it boring and won’t ever wear those pieces. And what about that sparkly blue club dress from Forever21 that I literally have never worn? I need to clean out and I know I will feel better for doing so, leaving space for more meaningful and nicer pieces. I think that’s a great metaphor to life, getting rid of the unnecessary things to clear space for better things.
Are you going to do any of these things or do you have your own style resolutions for 2016?
